Vidar – EnBWBaltic 2 Project – Baltic Sea
Scancrown´s Marine Warranty Surveyor, Bjarne Mikkelsen, was part of the project EnBWBaltic 2 in the period November – December 2014. Bjarne worked on Vidar, a jack-up vessel built in 2012. Bjarne´s role was to supervise the installation of different wind turbine components for the Baltic 2 wind farm.
The operation started in Sassnitz, Germany where the towers, nacelles and wings were loaded on the Vidar vessel. Vidar can carry components for up to 6 wind turbine installations and the loading process needs to be done with high precision and attention. During the loading process, it was necessary to correct the heeling of the vessel and then place the 260 tons towers on a circle of bolts that had the role to fasten them. The same procedure was done for nacelles and wings. Afterwards the components were transported securely to the designated installation places.
This loading process is very special and weather plays a crucial role in its development. On the field the components are installed on the jacket if the weather is favorable. Before each heavy lift operation, all the lifting equipment is thoroughly inspected and meetings are being held in order to insure that everyone is fully aware of their role in the process.
